Frederick and Marlies Henderson
with Oliver and Alice
Frederick Henderson grew up on a dairy farm in Western Pennsylvania just outside the tiny village of Elders Ridge. He came to know the Lord as his personal saviour while listening to Christian Radio aimed at young people. He started his ministry teaching 5-day Clubs with Child Evangelism Fellowship and after high school worked as field worker with them. He then attended Word of Life Bible Institute and there told the Lord that he would go wherever He wanted.
Marlies Henderson grew up in Switzerland where her family had a bicycle shop and a gas station. As she and her sister were planing a backpack trip, her aunt told her of meeting Swiss missionaries with Trans World Radio. They made an offer for them to come visit them on the island of Bonaire. Her aunt also told her that Marlies should look around as she felt that the Lord had a work and ministry waiting for her there. Marlies visited and then returned in 1990 for a one-year short term assignment where she worked as a studio operator putting programs on the the air.
Five years later when in 1995 Frederick came as as short term missionary she was still there. Frederick worked in studio and transmitter maintenance and also in the program traffic department scheduling and editing programs. The two got to know each other and were married in Switzerland in 1996.
Their son Oliver was born in 1998 and on the exact same day two years later their daughter Alice was born, both on Bonaire. That year they were transferred to Johannesburg, South Africa. Frederick worked in program administration in scheduling broadcasts, and also in program traffic before they were forced to leave due to the ill effects the air pollution had on the family’s health.
Jim and Karen Avella introduced them to the ministry of BBI and Radio HRGS over dinner one evening in South Africa. So, 2003 found the Hendersons moving once again, this time to the island of Roatan, Honduras. Frederick worked on all things technical, from the lawnmower to the transmitters. Marlies worked as the bookkeeper and both were on the air. Both served as on-air staff at Radio HRGS.
In 2009 the Hendersons moved to Marlies’ hometown of Bäretswil in Switzerland, to help her aging parents and also for the children’s education. Frederick currently works out of an office at home on projects for Bible Basics International’s headquarters. The first of these projects is the Website and Electronic Ministry of BBI.
