Haiti Emergency Relief Fund
January 2010

Tragedy struck the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. A major earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck the area around the capital, Port-au-Prince. This was followed by at least 20 aftershocks, several of over 5.0 on the Richter scale. As the rumblings began to settle, darkness came upon the city and the surrounding villages, making it impossible to assess the damages or assist the victims who were trapped, injured or simply driven from their homes. The country does not have the ability, the resources or the infrastructure to assist its own people and will rely upon the outside world to come to its aid.

Evan Drake, president of Bible Basics International, has been involved in Haiti for the past six years as a teacher at the annual pastors’ training seminar held by the ministry of Double Harvest Haiti, which is located on the east side of Port-au-Prince. He has established a rapport with about 130 pastors from the “Plaine du cul de sac,” a fertile plain on the outskirts of the suburban city of Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. Because of this link that has developed through Double Harvest’s ministry, and because of the great need to respond in compassion to the devastating effects of such an enormous natural disaster, Bible Basics International has established a Haiti Emergency Relief Fund that will allow us to come to the aid of our Christian brothers and sisters in Haiti. We have set three goals for this fund:

1. Seek to meet basic needs (food, water, clothing, shelter) of the people in the communities of the churches that we work with in the Croix des Bouquets area.
2. Help to rebuild churches that have been damaged or destroyed by the earthquake.
3. Help to rebuild homes of our brothers and sisters who have been displace in the aftermath of the earthquake.

We have set a goal of $100k and all donations to this fund will be used for these purposes. It is not our goal to become first responders in this crisis. Others are equipped and qualified to do that. We desire to be used of the Lord in the rebuilding of Haiti and in the compassionate presentation of the gospel through acts of mercy and love. Please donate generously to this fund. We will also begin preparing teams to go in and help rebuild. Pray about your involvement in bringing the light and love of Christ into a very dark and desperate land. May God bless you.
