Why should we involve ourselves in missions outreach?

In Luke Chapter 10, Jesus instructed His disciples to ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest because the harvest was ready and the workers were few. Jesus then immediately sent out the seventy witnesses.

To the Apostle Matthew, worldwide evangelism was so important that he made the Great Commandment the very last event in his Gospel account. Read Matthew 28:16-20 and notice that Matthew set the mood by telling us that some of the disciples were doubtful, even though they were worshipping the risen Lord. Jesus reassured them that He has all authority, told them to go to every nation and make disciples, and then reassured them again that He would always be there for them (and for us) as they and we follow His instructions.

The Old Testament, too, is full of declarations of God's desire that all the world should know of Him. Here are a few examples just from Psalms.

  • All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will worship before Thee — Psalm 22:27
  • Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations … — Psalm 46:10
  • All the earth will worship Thee, and will sing praises to Thee … — Psalm 66:4

There are countless other examples throughout both the Old and the New Testaments. But there is another more personal reason to involve ourselves in missionary activity — the joy of knowing we have communicated the Good News to those who would not have heard it any other way. Here are excerpts from just two of the many letters BBI has received from people around the world. These two are from India.
